Link Velocity Explained

Link velocity describes how a backlink profile changes over time. It is descriptive, not a universal speed limit.

What the term means

People use “link velocity” to describe the rate at which new links or referring domains appear. A newsworthy site can gain many links quickly; a quiet site may accumulate them slowly.

Why fixed daily limits are misleading

There is no universal number of links per day that is automatically safe or unsafe. The cause of the links matters: editorial attention, a product launch, syndication, spam and automated submissions can produce very different patterns.

What to monitor instead

Automation can create artificial spikes

When software produces submissions in batches, link growth may reflect tool settings rather than genuine editorial interest. Treat the pattern as a campaign artifact, not evidence that the links are valuable.
